H. Drew Sperry

Drew is an architect and community designer who focuses on key infrastructure related to recreation and tourism projects. He graduated top of his '66 School of Architecture class. His passion lies in tourism and community revitalization. He's interested in what makes communities tick, and how to enhance and restore community pride. Drew has played key roles in assignments related to military base conversions, feasibility studies for community development plans and tourism infrastructure projects.

Project Experience

1972 to Present

Established private practice in 1972, incorporated the following year. Partner-n-charge and principal designer of a wide variety of planning and architectural projects. The range of involvement includes:

Tourist resort and accommodation projects ranging from modest renovations for existing facilities to new $8 million resorts such as the Ramada in Sydney, NS, an Acadian Resort in Cheticamp, NS, and Sea Spa Nova Scotia, a $25 million resort hotel and facility in Aspotogan, NS. Involvement ranged from feasibility assessment to final design documentation.

Tourism Opportunity Development Programs for the Provincial Tourism Departments of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, including regional development strategies, major beach developments, park planning, low-cost seasonal tourist accommodation and facilities design such as interpretive centres, park service structures and museums.

Urban revitalization planning studies and architectural designs for infill commercial and public projects throughout Atlantic Canada. Communities range from small towns under the provincial Mainstreet Program to overall development concepts for major centres such as downtown Halifax, Sydney, and Truro, NS.

Land planning for numerous small and large scale residential developments for private developers and public projects such as the 600 unit, 90 acre C.M.H.C. Demonstration project, Maryfield Charlottetown, PEI. Projects include Bedford Village, winner of the 1974 Award of Excellence from the Canadian Housing Design Council and Biard Massé Village, a 550 acre mixed-use community in Dartmouth, NS.

Project definition, concept design, and feasibility assessment for outdoor recreation/tourism projects such as water theme parks, a miniatures park and a $9 million leisure park/camping resort for private investors, as well as public restoration projects such as Sherbrooke Village and the Shubenacadie Canal System.

Waterfront Development Opportunity Studies, conceptual design, implementation strategies and design guidelines for the waterfronts of Halifax-Dartmouth, NS; Summerside, PEI; Woodstock, NB; Pictou, North Sydney, Liverpool, Yarmouth, Canso, Shelburne, and Bedford, NS.

Many of these projects have realized dramatic transformations to the resultant community population and environment. The overall outcome of which has been continued new investment, including, in many cases, new or renovated full service marina's, pubs and farmers market's, as well as an increase in new related businesses and 100's of new jobs.
